Deck Painting & Staining in Ashland & Worcester, MA — finishes that stand up to new england.
Decks fail predictably: UV breaks down the sealer, water gets into the grain, and the boards turn gray. Our restoration process reverses all three — we strip the damaged layer back to fresh wood, then seal with penetrating finishes that stay flexible through freeze-thaw cycles.
We stain cedar, pressure-treated pine, ipe, mahogany, and composite. Different species take stain differently; we match the product to the wood.

Our deck restoration process
- Power wash with wood brightener to remove gray oxidation
- Full sand of horizontal surfaces to fresh wood
- Inspect fasteners, tighten or replace where needed
- Fill minor cracks; flag rotted boards for replacement
- Two coats of penetrating transparent, semi-transparent, or solid stain
- Optional clear sealer topcoat for maximum UV resistance

Transparent, semi-transparent, or solid — which finish?
Transparent stain
Best on newer decks. Shows the full wood grain. Lasts 1–2 years in Massachusetts weather; needs more frequent refresh but looks the most natural.
Semi-transparent stain
Our most popular choice for decks 3–10 years old. Masks some imperfections while still showing grain. 2–3 years between refreshes.
Solid stain or deck paint
Best for older decks with mixed conditions. Covers completely, lasts 4–6 years, but can peel over time if prep is rushed — which is why we only apply it after proper sanding.

Deck Painting & Staining — common questions
How long does a deck stain last?
Transparent: 1–2 years. Semi-transparent: 2–3 years. Solid/deck paint: 4–6 years. All assume proper prep and premium product.
Paint or stain?
Stain penetrates and doesn't peel — it's the right choice for pressure-treated and cedar decks. Paint sits on top and eventually peels unless prep is meticulous; it's occasionally used on composite or previously-painted decks.
How do I know if my deck needs re-staining?
Sprinkle water on your deck. If it soaks in within 30 seconds instead of beading up, the sealer has failed and the wood is taking on water — re-stain before damage sets in.
When's the best time to stain?
Late spring through early fall, temps 50–85°F, with 48+ hours of dry weather on either side of application.
