Massachusetts Painting Schedule — when to paint each service
Paint cure depends on temperature, humidity, and dew point. Massachusetts seasons make some services slam-dunk in one month and impossible the next. Here's the calendar.
| Season | Months | Interior | Exterior | Cabinets | Deck |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Best window | Not recommended | Best window | Not recommended |
| Early Spring | Mar–early May | Best window | Fair | Best window | Fair |
| Late Spring | mid-May–Jun | Good | Best window | Good | Best window |
| Summer | Jul–Aug | Fair | Good | Good | Good |
| Early Fall | Sep–Oct | Good | Best window | Good | Best window |
| Late Fall | Nov | Best window | Fair | Best window | Fair |
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Peak interior + cabinet season. Heated homes mean perfect indoor cure conditions; we book interior projects 2-3 weeks out. No exterior or deck work — temps below 35°F prevent proper paint cure.
Early Spring (Mar–early May)
Interior demand peaks for pre-listing prep. Some exterior is possible on premium low-temp formulations (Aura Exterior down to 35°F), but most exterior projects start mid-May. Decks: too wet from snowmelt.
Late Spring (mid-May–Jun)
Exterior season opens. Stable 50–80°F days, dropping humidity, longer daylight. We book exterior + deck slots fast — May/June calendars fill 4-6 weeks out. Best window for high-quality exterior cure.
Summer (Jul–Aug)
Hot, humid days slow exterior cure (we paint in early morning, not 2pm). Interior demand dips as homeowners travel. Good window for deck restoration and cabinet refinishing on cooler weeks.
Early Fall (Sep–Oct)
Often the best window of the year — low humidity, stable temperatures, less pollen. Last call for full exterior projects. Deck restoration before winter freeze. Interior pre-Thanksgiving repaints get booked.
Late Fall (Nov)
Exterior season closes when overnight temps consistently drop below 40°F. Interior + cabinet demand surges for pre-holiday refresh. Book interior projects 2-3 weeks out.
The science behind the calendar
Three weather variables drive whether paint cures right in Massachusetts: temperature, humidity, and dew point.
Temperature window
Most premium exterior paints cure between 50–85°F. Some (Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior) extend down to 35°F with the low-temp formulation, but the surface still needs to stay above the minimum overnight. Massachusetts April mornings often dip below — we rarely paint exteriors before mid-May.
Humidity ceiling
Above 85% relative humidity, the water in the paint can't evaporate fast enough — the film stays soft for hours and picks up dust. We schedule MA exteriors with 48 hours of dry forecast on either side of paint days.
Dew point
If the surface is colder than the dew point, condensation forms on the siding under fresh paint. The paint never bonds. We check surface temperature with a moisture meter before priming on borderline days.
Why winter is interior peak
Heated, weatherproof homes mean perfect cure conditions year-round indoors. Interior + cabinet refinishing don't care about outside weather. We run interior projects 12 months a year, with peak demand from December through March.
