Deck Painting & staining for Canton, MA homeowners.

Census estimates count 5,516 detached houses in Canton, 55.9% of housing units, along with 651 attached townhouse-style units, some of which may have a small deck or balcony of their own. A deck that stays shaded and damp grows mildew and algae sooner than one in open sun, and the boards stay wet longer after rain. For yards near the Ponkapoag area or under tall trees, that argues for a stain with a mildewcide, cleaning before every recoat, and trimming branches that drip on the boards.

Choosing stain or paint

Transparent and semi-transparent stains soak into the wood and fade gradually, so the next round is mostly washing and reapplying. Solid stains and deck paints build a film that hides more of the grain and older repairs, but when that film fails it flakes and has to be removed before recoating. Switching from a peeling solid color to a see-through stain means taking the boards back to bare wood with stripper and sanding. That is a larger project than a maintenance coat and should be priced separately.

The prep sequence

New coating will only last as long as the surface under it. Each deck gets cleaned or stripped according to what is on it now, rinsed, brightened if the wood has grayed, and left to dry until water soaks in instead of beading. Popped nails or screws are reset, splinters sanded, and soft or cracked boards flagged so they can be replaced before finishing.
