Preparation sequence
Rushing the drying step invites early failure. Wood that looks dry on top can still hold moisture below the surface.
- Inspect for soft or rotted boards, loose fasteners and failed railings, and repair them first
- Clean with a deck cleaner to remove mildew, dirt and loose finish
- Strip failed film finishes if they are peeling
- Let the wood dry fully and sand rough spots
- Apply the stain or paint in dry, moderate weather, working with the grain
- Add a second coat on railings and horizontal edges, where wear is greatest
Shade, water and drainage
Shaded decks stay damp and grow mildew, so a mildew-resistant stain and gaps between boards for drainage help. Decks near ground level lose airflow underneath, and leaves packed into the gaps hold moisture. Clearing debris from between boards is a small chore that extends the life of the finish.
