Single-family detached houses make up 74.3% of the housing here: roughly three of every four homes are freestanding buildings with four elevations, their own trim and whatever coatings previous owners applied. What that siding looks like depends heavily on the decade. The 1950s produced more of today's houses than any other ten-year span, close to one in five, and the town's history page notes that Route 128, built in 1951, opened land to development.

At the other end, 18% of units were built in 1939 or earlier. That group includes the wood-frame houses around McIntosh Corner, the former town center. Prep on walls that old is a different job from repainting a fifteen-year-old house.

McIntosh Corner and the inventoried houses

The McIntosh Corner Historic District, the former town center at Great Plain Avenue and Central Street, was listed on the National Register in 1989. Its houses are mostly wood-frame, two and a half stories and usually five bays wide, in late colonial and Federal form, with a center entrance and two interior chimneys. The oldest is the Daniel Kingsbury House of 1794.

Five bays means five openings across each floor of the front, so on a house of that form a large share of the labor sits in window sash and casings and in scraping old paint back to a sound edge. Body, trim and sash can be treated as three separate color decisions rather than one color everywhere.

McIntosh Corner is a National Register district, not a local one. The Historical Commission reviews proposed demolitions under the town's demolition delay by-law, and the only local historic district in the state inventory is a single parcel, the Jonathan Kingsbury House at 3 Rosemary Street, recorded as designated in October 2025; the study committee's draft by-law left paint color out of review. If your house is on the historic inventory and you plan to replace trim or siding rather than paint it, ask the town before work starts.

Lead-safe scraping outdoors

Federal RRP rules treat exterior work on a pre-1978 house as a lead-safe job once more than 20 square feet of painted surface will be disturbed. On a clapboard house, a single side's worth of scraping passes that easily. The setup involves ground sheeting extended out from the wall, closed windows nearby, no dry power sanding without dust collection, and a careful daily cleanup so chips do not end up in garden beds.

Census figures put 63.9% of units here in the built-1979-or-earlier range, so this is a common situation rather than a special case. The lead-safe painting page covers the steps in more detail.

Postwar houses and newer replacement homes

A 1950s house may have less trim and simpler profiles, but it can hide its own problems: original wood clapboard under later layers, painted cedar shingles that have absorbed moisture, or aluminum gutters pulled away from rotting fascia. Repairs to sills and fascia should be part of the scope, not a surprise mid-job.

The Planning Board's own count of 840 residential demolition permits from mid-2013 to mid-2023 shows how many older homes have been replaced with new ones. A newer house may have fiber-cement siding, PVC trim or factory-primed boards, each of which takes a specific primer and paint system. Using the primer and paint the siding maker specifies also matters for any finish warranty it carries.

Season and scheduling

Exterior paint needs dry wood and temperatures above the product minimum for several hours after application, which in eastern Massachusetts means roughly late spring through mid-fall. Each acrylic house paint lists its own minimum application temperature on the label, and late-season jobs have to be planned around overnight lows against that number, not daytime highs.
