Painting metal garage doors and old masonry
Metal overhead doors
Steel garage doors need to be washed and lightly scuffed so new paint can bond, with any rust spots sanded and primed with a metal primer. Exterior acrylic or direct-to-metal coatings hold up to the flexing of the panels as the door opens and closes.
Peeling paint on masonry
Masonry and stucco shed paint when moisture gets behind it. Loose paint has to be scraped back to a sound edge before priming; painting over flaking layers just lets the new coat peel with the old one.
Bold colors on doors
Saturated reds often need more than two coats to cover evenly, especially over white, and they fade fastest in direct sun. A quality exterior line with good UV resistance keeps the color from going pink.
