Cabinet Painting throughout Norwood, MA.

The Census puts the median construction year of local housing at 1960, and a fifth of all units went up in the 1950s alone. A house that age may still have its first kitchen, or it may be on its third. The year on the deed says little about the cabinets, so a refinishing plan starts with two questions: what are the doors and boxes made of, and what coating is on them now?

Those answers decide the cleaner, the sanding, the primer and whether paint is a good idea at all.

Identify the material first

Open a door and look at the edge and the inside of the box. Cabinet construction generally falls into one of these groups:

• Solid oak: takes paint well, but its open grain telegraphs through unless the pores are filled before priming
• Maple, cherry and birch: tight grain that paints smooth after a scuff sand and bonding primer
• Plywood boxes with wood-veneer faces: paintable, though thin veneer must be sanded lightly to avoid cutting through
• MDF doors: smooth and stable; raw MDF edges soak up primer and need sealing
• Melamine or laminate: needs a primer made for slick surfaces, and chipped edges should be repaired first
• Thermofoil (a vinyl wrap): peeling film cannot be painted over reliably, which makes replacement or refacing the better route

Cabinets that were painted long ago

In a kitchen that has been painted before, the bottom layer might be decades old. Census data show 71.5% of local housing units predate 1980, and paint applied before 1978 can contain lead. Sanding cabinet doors makes fine dust, and a kitchen is where food is prepared and crawling children spend time, so it makes sense to test the old coating before any sanding starts.

If lead is present, the EPA rule requires paid work to be done by certified renovators using lead-safe practices; Massachusetts runs that program itself. Refinish or replace?

Painting keeps the boxes, the layout and the countertops in place, which avoids demolition, plumbing and the counter work that new cabinets often trigger. It is a good fit when the boxes are solid, the doors are flat and square, and you like how the kitchen works.

Rental and condo kitchens

Renters live in 46.0% of the town's occupied homes, and 26.9% of all housing units are in buildings with five or more units. For a landlord, painted cabinets plus new pulls can make a dated rental kitchen look current between tenants. A hard enamel in a mid-tone color shows less wear than bright white.

Finish and curing

Cabinet coatings are usually waterborne alkyds or urethane-modified enamels, which level out smoothly and harden more than wall paint. They feel dry within hours but take weeks to reach full hardness. In that period, close doors gently, wait before installing bumpers, and avoid scrubbing the faces.
