Cork City Painters — Railroad Avenue & Lenox Street

Cork City was the name residents gave to the Irish workers' quarter near a 19th-century tannery. Its exact edges were never written down, so this page sticks to what the records support.

About the neighborhood

An Irish tannery quarter by the tracks

Reading the town's 1876 map, the Norwood Historical Society places Cork City around Lyman Smith's tannery, near the corner of Railroad Avenue and Lenox Street, which was then called Foundry Street. The area was heavily populated by Irish workers and was one of the town's main population centers at the time. Railroad Avenue then ran only from Washington Street to Pleasant Street. By 1875 Norwood counted 217 Irish residents in a town of 1,744.

Cork City was one of several enclaves, alongside Swedeville and Germantown, that formed through chain migration, as friends and family followed earlier arrivals to Norwood. Residents' old directions kept it separate from Dublin, another Irish section: the house 'second on the right on Railroad Ave in Cork City' was not the one on 'the Railroad Ave that crossed over into Dublin.'

What we could not find is a survey of the houses themselves. No source we read gives Cork City's boundaries, its building dates, or whether any tannery-era worker housing still stands. Today's numbers come from Census Tract 4132.01, which takes in the 100 block of Railroad Avenue and 50 Lenox Street, but the tract also covers the Town Hall and 100 Central Street, so treat it as a rough proxy.

What makes Cork City projects distinct

Housing from every decade

Tract 4132.01 has a median year built of 1971. Its largest single decade is the 1970s, with 454 of 2,188 units, yet 293 units predate 1940 and nearly a third went up in 1980 or later. That spread means prep has to be decided house by house: a prewar exterior carrying decades of coatings and a house from the 1990s need very different amounts of scraping and priming.

Most units predate 1980

68.1% of the tract's units were built before 1980. Any of those built before 1978 may carry lead paint under later coats, so scraping and sanding fall under certified lead-safe work practices until a test says otherwise.

Larger buildings in the mix

Close to one in five units in the tract (426) sits in a building of 20 or more units, and another 407 are in two- to four-family houses. Where one of those buildings is a condominium, hallways and exteriors are common areas controlled by the association, which may set insurance requirements and work hours; the unit owner decides about the interior.

Attached homes share a face

191 units in the tract are single-family attached, meaning townhouse-style homes that share walls. Repainting one end of a row affects how the whole row reads from the street, so check any association color rules and talk with the neighbors before picking a new body or trim color.

Cork City painting questions

Where exactly is Cork City?

No official map draws it. Historical accounts center it on the old tannery near Railroad Avenue and Lenox Street, and long-time residents kept it separate from the Dublin section. Homes near that corner sit in the area the name referred to.

My home went up in the 1970s. Do lead rules still apply?

Yes, if it was built before 1978. Paid work that disturbs paint in those homes must follow EPA's renovation rules, which Massachusetts runs itself. Homes built in 1978 or later are outside that rule.

I'm in a large condo building near Railroad Avenue. Who arranges the painting?

Interiors are generally the owner's call; hallways and exteriors belong to the association. Our Norwood condo painting page explains how insurance certificates and building rules fit in.

How can I budget for repainting here?

AJ doesn't post prices. Look at Massachusetts market data on painting costs for ranges, then book a free visit for a written estimate on your house.
