Wyoma Painters — Around Wyoma Square and the ponds

Wyoma Square is officially Curtis Square, named for World War I veteran Frederick L. Curtis, and Broadway runs through it with Lynnfield Street leading in. The name Wyoma itself shows up in Alonzo Lewis's 1844 History of Lynn, and the Lynn Museum notes nobody is sure where it came from.

The Massachusetts Historical Commission traces the area's growth in layers. A few Federal-period houses appear to survive around the square, with possible late-18th-century survivals along Lynnfield Street. Streetcars later tied the once-isolated village into the city; single-family building rose in proportion here, and three-family houses stopped short of Sluice Pond. Between the world wars, modest Craftsman bungalows and two-families spread along Lynnfield Street and the shores of Flax and Sluice Ponds, and New England Colonial designs were built around Flax Pond.

Census tracts show the result. Tract 2053, which contains the 1–215 stretch of Lynnfield Street plus addresses on Bacheller and Warwick Streets, is 89.5% single-family detached, and owners live in 96.5% of its occupied units. Tract 2052, which includes Parkland Avenue and Richardson Road, is older and more mixed: 62.3% of its units date to 1939 or earlier, and 30.9% sit in two- to four-unit buildings.

Bungalow eaves and porches

Craftsman bungalows of the 1915–1940 era typically have deep overhangs, exposed rafter tails and wide front porches. Rafter ends and porch floors add prep time, since each tail is painted individually and porch decking wears differently from walls.

Older houses mixed in

MHC's 1997 notes flag the Flax Pond and Long Hill area for Federal and Early Industrial houses visible in field surveys, and say Wyoma had only partial survey data. On a house that may predate the streetcar era, it is worth looking at clapboard profiles and window trim before deciding what to replace versus repair.

Mostly owner-run decisions

Owners live in 96.5% of Tract 2053's occupied units, a far higher share than Lynn's 48.1% citywide. Where a single owner makes the call, work can be phased, for example trim and porch one season and full body color the next.

A big 1940s–50s layer

Tract 2053's median build year is 1948, and a third of its units (33.5%) date from the 1940s and 1950s. If a mid-century house there has been resided, the paint scope may shrink to trim, doors, shutters and interiors.
