Wood species and grain
Red oak has an open grain that shows through paint as a texture of fine lines. That texture can suit a casual kitchen; for a smooth, furniture-like finish, the pores have to be filled with a grain filler or several coats of high-build primer, each sanded back. Maple, birch and poplar have tight grain and paint smoothly with less work. Cherry and some exotic veneers can bleed tannins through water-based primer, which a shellac-based or stain-blocking primer stops.
Prep that decides how long the finish lasts
Doors and drawer fronts are best sprayed in a controlled area so they dry flat and dust-free; the face frames and box sides are brushed and rolled or sprayed in place with the kitchen masked off. Our kitchen cabinet painting process shows each step.
- Remove doors, drawer fronts and hardware, and label every piece and hinge location
- Degrease with a cleaner made for kitchen grime; paint applied over leftover grease can fail to bond
- Scuff-sand the old finish and vacuum and tack the dust off
- Apply a bonding primer suited to the existing coating, then two coats of cabinet-grade enamel
- Give the finish its full cure time before heavy use, even after it feels dry
Older painted cabinets and lead
Some 14.7% of the town's homes date from 1939 or earlier, and a kitchen or pantry in a house that old may still have built-in cupboards carrying many layers of paint. If a house was built before 1978, sanding painted cabinets can release lead dust into the room where food is prepared, so the work should follow lead-safe practices unless testing shows no lead.
