Interior painting, Taunton

Painting rooms in Taunton houses built across three centuries

Census tables show housing here spread across every era: 8,757 units from 1939 or earlier, then a rise every decade to 4,020 units built in the 1980s, the largest single decade outside the prewar group. A living room in one of those prewar houses and a bedroom in a 1980s house need different prep before any paint goes on, even when the color is the same.

In the older group, plaster on lath is likely, along with hairline cracks, loose keys near doorways, and ceilings that have taken several coats of flat paint over the years. Later houses are more likely to have drywall, where the common problems are nail pops, taped seams that show through, and builder-grade flat paint that scuffs when you wipe it.

Plaster walls and high ceilings

Plaster repair is mostly about telling cosmetic cracks from structural looseness. A crack that moves when you press beside it means the plaster has let go of the lath and needs re-anchoring before patching; skim-coating over it only hides the problem for a season. Stable cracks get opened slightly, filled with a setting compound, and primed so the patch does not flash through the finish.

Ceilings in older rooms are often the trickiest surface. Layers of old calcimine or flat paint can lift when a heavy new coat wets them, so a small test patch shows whether the ceiling needs a bonding primer first.

Lead dust indoors

About 64% of local housing was built before 1980, and federal rules treat any home built before 1978 as one that may hold lead paint. Indoors, the EPA's renovation rule applies once paid work disturbs more than six square feet of painted surface in a room. Sanding a single door and its casing can pass that number.

Windows, stair treads, baseboards and door edges are the usual worries, because friction there turns old paint into dust. Lead-safe interior work means sealing off the room, misting before scraping, HEPA vacuuming and a wipe-down before furniture comes back. Our lead-safe painting page has the specifics, including when a test can rule lead out.

Trim from different eras

About half of the city's 97 National Register entries are individual houses; NPS records describe one of them, the Atwood House on Dean Street, as Italianate, significant for 1850 to 1874. Interiors of that age may still have tall baseboards, deep window casings and paneled doors with original oil-based paint under later latex. Latex applied straight over glossy oil tends to peel off in strips, so old trim gets a deglossing step and an adhesion primer.

Newer homes may have simpler profiles and latex paint from the start. For trim in either kind of house, a satin or semi-gloss enamel holds up to hands and vacuums far better than wall paint. The interior finish comparison explains which sheen fits which surface.

Rental units and winter scheduling

Renters occupy 37.9% of occupied housing in the city, and 29.0% of all units are in two- to four-unit buildings. For a landlord, one practical window is the gap between leases, when a unit can be patched and painted top to bottom without working around furniture.

Interior work does not depend on the season. With 127.8 nights at or below freezing in a normal local year, winter jobs simply need low-odor products and a plan for airing rooms out. The post on winter interior painting covers ventilation with windows mostly shut. For outside work, see exterior painting; for kitchens, the cabinet page. The Oakland page covers housing in that part of the city.

Taunton FAQ

Answers from Taunton homeowners.

Our plaster walls have cracks everywhere. Do they need to be replaced with drywall?

Not necessarily. Stable cracks in old plaster can be filled and primed. Only areas where the plaster has separated from the lath need re-anchoring first. Tearing out sound plaster creates a lot of dust, and on a pre-1978 house, possibly lead dust.

The house was built in 1925. Will the painters need to follow lead rules inside?

Yes, if the work disturbs more than six square feet of paint in any room, unless a certified test shows the surfaces are lead-free. Repainting walls without sanding may stay under that line, but trim and window work can easily go over it.

Can you paint over the dark varnished woodwork in our old house?

It can be painted, but the change is hard to undo. The wood needs cleaning, a light scuff and a stain-blocking primer so tannins do not bleed through. If some original woodwork is in good shape, consider leaving one room as it is.

I'm a landlord with a two-family. How quickly can a vacant unit be repainted?

That depends on the number of rooms, wall repairs and whether ceilings are included. A written estimate will list the scope, so you can line it up with the move-out and move-in dates.

How do I figure out a budget for painting several rooms?

Room count matters less than surface condition, ceiling height, trim detail and lead-safe requirements. The interior painting cost guide and the post on painting one room use Massachusetts market data. AJ Painting gives a free written estimate after an on-site visit.

Is it fine to paint inside during January?

Yes. Interior paint needs a warm room, not warm weather. Keep the heat on, crack a window when you can, and choose a low-VOC product to keep odor down while the house is closed up.
