Canton Center Painters — Canton Center, around Memorial Hall

A Canton Citizen history column describes Canton Corner as the town's second center, used "before the development moved south to present-day Canton Center." The anchor of that newer center is Memorial Hall at 801 Washington Street, built in 1878–1879 to a design by Stephen Earle. SAH Archipedia calls it the town's first purpose-built municipal building, a three-story Gothic Revival hall of red brick and brownstone. The public library, finished in 1902 at 786 Washington Street, stands diagonally across the Washington and Sherman intersection.

We found no historic district or architectural survey covering Canton Center's residential streets, so the housing picture comes from census data. The block group that contains Memorial Hall has 591 housing units with a median build year of 1958. Of those units, 36.4% went up in the 1950s, 15.1% date from 1939 or earlier, and 83.9% were built before 1980. About three in four (75.3%) are single-family detached and another 17.9% are single-family attached. The larger tract around it, 4151.01, is newer overall: its median year is 1978, and 52.7% of its 1,914 units predate 1980.

A 1950s housing core

With more than a third of the block group's homes from a single decade, a house from that decade may already carry seventy years of repaints. Each new coat sits on all the ones below it, so a loose or chalky layer underneath can let the whole stack peel.

Lead is a realistic question

Federal guidance treats housing built before 1978 as possibly holding lead paint, and 83.9% of this block group predates 1980. Testing before sanding or scraping, plus dust containment indoors and out, is described on our lead-safe painting page.

Attached homes share walls and decisions

Close to 18% of units in the block group are single-family attached. When a townhouse-style building is painted one unit at a time, color, sheen and trim details have to match the neighbors or be agreed on first.

Interior trim from several eras
