How the work is done

In a professional cabinet job, doors and drawer fronts come off, get labeled, and are finished off-site or in a protected area so they can be sprayed and cured flat. The boxes stay in place: the kitchen is masked, surfaces are degreased, which matters most around the range, then scuff-sanded and primed.

Older kitchens and lead

Census figures show 617 housing units in town were built in 1939 or earlier, and 56.7% before 1980. In a kitchen that predates the 1978 ban, original painted cabinets, built-ins or window trim in the same room may have lead under later coats.
