Whether paint is the right answer comes down to the boxes behind the doors: if they are solid, square and laid out in a way you can live with, refinishing them is far less disruptive than replacement.

Reading the cabinets you have

Open-grain species like oak show their grain pattern through paint unless the pores are filled first. If you like that texture, it can stay; a smooth, sprayed look means grain filler and extra sanding.

• Solid wood doors and face frames: the best candidates for paint, as long as joints are tight
• Plywood boxes with wood veneer: paint well once the veneer is sound and scuff-sanded
• Particleboard or MDF with a printed or thermofoil skin: paint adhesion is poor and peeling skins usually mean replacement
• Painted cabinets already: possible, but the old coating must be checked for adhesion and, in older homes, for lead

Why prep matters more on cabinets than walls

Cabinet surfaces get handled every day and are coated with years of cooking grease, which no paint will bond to. A durable job removes doors and hardware, labels each piece, degreases every surface, scuff-sands, and uses a bonding primer before two coats of a cabinet-grade enamel. Doors and drawer fronts can be finished off-site or in a dedicated spray area while the boxes are brushed and rolled in place.

Plan for cure time as well as dry time. Many cabinet enamels are dry to the touch within hours but take days or weeks to reach full hardness, so the first period after reinstallation calls for some care with slamming doors and abrasive cleaners. Lead and older painted cabinets

In a house built before 1978, cabinets that were painted decades ago may carry lead-based paint under later coats. Sanding them for repainting can easily exceed the EPA's interior threshold of six square feet per room, at which point lead-safe practices are required. Paint, reface or replace

Painting keeps your existing boxes, doors and layout. Refacing keeps the boxes but adds new doors and veneer. Replacement starts over and usually brings countertop and plumbing work with it.
