Local kitchens come from very different decades. Census estimates count about 994 housing units built in the 1950s, about 908 in the 1970s and 1,294 built in 2000 or later. Original cabinets from those periods can differ in material and factory finish, and those differences change how they take paint.

What your cabinets are made of

Maple and birch are tight-grained and take paint smoothly once the factory lacquer is scuffed and primed with a bonding primer.
MDF and painted doors take paint well, but chipped edges need filling first. Thermofoil (a vinyl wrap) is a poor candidate: if it's peeling or yellowing, paint won't stick to it reliably, and replacing the doors is the better route.

How the work is done
A durable cabinet finish comes from steps that are easy to skip:
- Remove doors, drawer fronts and hardware, labeling each for its spot
- Degrease with a cleaner made for kitchen grime, then scuff-sand
- Prime with a bonding primer suited to the existing finish
- Spray doors and fronts in a controlled space; brush and roll the face frames in place
- Allow the enamel to cure before rehanging and heavy use
Refinish or replace?
Census estimates put the median owner-occupied home value in town at $539,600, but a home's value doesn't settle this question on its own. The choice between new cabinets and repainting the existing boxes comes down to what stays and what has to be torn out. Painting keeps the countertops and the plumbing where they are; new cabinets usually mean the counters come out too.

Can thermofoil doors be painted?

How long will the kitchen be out of commission?
The boxes are workable throughout, though shelves and contents need to come out where frames are painted. Doors are away while they're sprayed and cured, so plan on a stretch with open shelving.
Is painting cheaper than new cabinets?
