Painting Knotty Pine Paneling in Mashpee, MA
A Mashpee home on Cape Cod with several rooms and a hallway finished in knotty pine paneling, prepared and sprayed. The photos show the prep and spraying; the video shows the rooms after the paneling was painted white.
What the photos and videos show
- Rooms and a hallway lined floor to ceiling with stained knotty pine paneling
- Floors covered with paper and taped edges, windows masked with plastic
- Paint being sprayed with an airless sprayer by a painter in a protective suit
- A walk-through video of the rooms afterwards, with the paneling painted white
What painting knotty pine paneling involves
Knots bleed through ordinary primer
Pine knots carry resin and tannin that can show through latex paint as yellow or brown spots. A stain-blocking primer made for knots, such as a shellac-based or oil-based product, is what keeps them from bleeding back.
Cleaning and scuffing first
Old paneling usually has a varnish or lacquer finish. It needs to be cleaned and scuff-sanded so primer can grip, and nail holes or gaps can be filled before painting.
Why spraying helps
Grooved paneling has many vertical seams that are slow to brush. Spraying gets paint into the grooves evenly, which is why the whole room has to be masked first: floors, windows, doors and anything that stays.
