Assembly Square Painters — Assembly Square · Somerville

The name comes from industry, not homes. Assembly Square is named for a 52-acre Ford assembly plant that closed in 1958, according to a 2012 Boston.com history. When the Orange Line's Assembly station opened on September 2, 2014, the city called Assembly Row "Somerville's newest neighborhood."

The housing numbers back that up. In Census Tract 3501.06, which covers the Assembly Row core, the American Community Survey counts 1,228 housing units with a median year built of 2016. Of those, 1,196 (97.4%) went up in 2010 or later. The survey counts zero units built between 1940 and 1979, and its estimate of 16 pre-1940 units has a margin of error of ±17, so the true number could be zero. Somerville as a whole looks very different: its citywide median year built is 1938.

Building size is just as lopsided. The same tract places 1,204 of its 1,228 units (98.0%) in buildings with 50 or more units, and it records no single-family houses at all. Miscela, completed in 2021, has 24 stories and 500 apartments and calls itself the city's tallest residential building. For an owner or tenant, that puts the work inside the unit: walls, ceilings, doors, and trim. Building exteriors at this scale fall to the owner or management, not individual residents.

More change is on the way. In July 2025 the Planning Board adopted an Assembly Square Neighborhood Plan for about 140 acres along the Mystic River. The city says that once fully carried out, it creates potential for 2,900 to 5,700 new residential units. Those buildings will add to the stock of newer, larger apartment and condo buildings rather than older houses.

Renters far outnumber owners

ACS estimates for Tract 3501.06 show 1,126 of 1,228 occupied units (91.7%) are rented and 102 (±38) are owner-occupied. If you rent, get written approval from your landlord or property manager before changing a wall color. Condo owners should check their association's rules.

Building logistics shape the schedule

Before booking work in a large building, ask management about certificates of insurance, freight elevator reservations, loading access, and allowed work hours, so the crew can arrive with everything already cleared. Newer drywall, different prep

Units finished in the 2010s and 2020s are likely drywall rather than the horsehair plaster found in Somerville's older wards. Lead rules rarely apply inside the tract

The federal RRP rule covers paint disturbance in homes built before 1978. The census estimate for Tract 3501.06 shows no units from 1940 through 1979 and only a small, uncertain count from before 1940, so the rule seldom comes into play there.
