Sterling does not have one kind of interior. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 estimates count 3,309 housing units in town and put the median build year at 1980, give or take six years. Around that midpoint sit 1,372 units (41.5%) from 1980 through 2009, and on one side of it a long tail of older houses, 439 of them (13.3%) dating to 1939 or earlier. Painting a 1990s colonial and painting a farmhouse from the 1800s are different jobs even when the paint color is the same.

The useful first questions for any interior are about the surfaces: what the walls are made of, how many coats already sit on the trim, and whether anything is moving, cracking or staining. Color comes after that.

Plaster, drywall and the repairs between them

The Sterling Historical Society's timeline dates the start of housing developments to 1955, when farmland began giving way to them. Census counts show 127 homes from the 1950s, 436 from the 1960s and 432 from the 1970s. We have no source that says what those walls are made of, so each house has to be checked on its own. Some are plaster, some are drywall, and some rooms have been patched with both.

That matters for prep. Hairline plaster cracks reopen unless they are bridged with mesh or flexible filler. Drywall seams show as ridges under a glossy sheen if they were not feathered properly. Old nail pops, water stains from a past roof leak and tape lines all need different fixes. A stain-blocking primer goes on before the finish coat wherever there is staining, or it will show through again within months.

Lead dust in pre-1980 rooms

Residential lead paint was banned in 1978. The Census does not report by that exact year, but 1,648 of Sterling's 3,309 units, 49.8%, were built before 1980, so roughly half the town's interiors could hold older paint layers. Window sills, door casings, baseboards and stair parts are the usual places, because they take friction and are dry-scraped by owners over the years.

Trim, ceilings and the older rooms of the center

Sterling Center Historic District was listed on the National Register on April 14, 1988. The National Park Service records Federal, Greek Revival and Late Victorian styles, with a period of significance from 1750 to 1949. In houses from those periods, the trim we look at first is the casings, doors and baseboards, because years of repainting leave the most buildup there. Brush-applied enamels are a common choice for trim because they level well and resist scuffing.

The Stephen Hastings House at 20 Squareshire Road, a brick house built in 1794 and listed on the National Register in 2005, is a reminder of how old some Sterling interiors are. Not every old house is listed, and listing does not govern what you paint inside, but heavy trim buildup on a two-hundred-year-old room can hide detail. Stripping it is sometimes worth discussing, and sometimes it is not.

Finishes, rooms and planning

Ceilings take a flat finish that hides flaws. Walls in kitchens, baths and hallways usually do better in eggshell or satin because they can be wiped. Trim takes semi-gloss or satin for durability.
