A 1924 Winchester center-entrance colonial near the Common — symmetrical facade, six-over-six original wood windows, slate roof. The owners wanted a refreshed period-appropriate palette and a finish that would hold the next decade of New England weather.
The challenge
Center-entrance colonials live or die on facade symmetry. Any visible imperfection reads from the street. Plus original 1924 wood windows need delicate sash protection during repaint.
What we did
- Soft-wash with mildewcide, dwell, rinse
- Scrape failing paint to sound substrate (mostly south + west elevations)
- Oil-bond prime all bare wood; rebuild failing glazing on two windows
- Full caulk replacement at trim joints (~520 linear feet)
- Hand-brushed two coats Aura Exterior throughout
- Black shutters refinished off the building, rehung with new stainless fasteners
- Front door refinished in black semi-gloss (BM Advance)
The result
Facade symmetry preserved, original wood windows intact, modern color palette that reads period-appropriate.
